What Technical Designers Do

Technical designers use computer-based systems to produce or revise technical illustrations needed in the design and development of machines, products, buildings, manufacturing processes, oil and chemical processing and other work.

Design and drafting are two steps needed to put engineering ideas on paper.  The designer develops concepts and puts the concepts into technical illustrations, which can be read by the people who actually make the product.

Until about 20 years ago, most designing and drafting were done with pencil and paper on the drafting board.  Today, computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) systems are the tool of choice in industries that require detailed drawings.  CADD systems not only allow the operator to draw the technical illustration on screen--they also make complex mathematical calculations, spot problems, offer advice and provide a wide range of other assistance.  Some CADD systems provide instructions directly to manufacturing equipment.

Technical designers usually specialize in one industry or in one part of design.

Earnings for Technical Designers

In Texas, first year salaries for technical designers start around $25,000.

After five years experience, the average salary is around $30,000.

With the right experience, some technical designers make over $50,000 per year.

Advancement Possibilities

The next step up from a technical designer might be a lead designer or supervisor.  Opportunities will vary depending on the company.

One possibility is to go back to school and get a four-year degree and become an engineer.

Educational Requirements for Technical Designer

Some employers will hire new CADD technicians with a one-year certificate of proficiency.  Many employers, however, require their new designers to have an AAS degree in design technology.
